这个黑人小伙子,五官端正,眉目清秀,沉默寡言,身高六英尺,健壮魁梧。在班上按部就班,一丝不苟,大家与他接触,立即就能感觉出这是一个受过良好教育,修养颇好的人。
他的祖辈一直居住在美国南方的乔治亚州,直到父亲大学毕业后在宾夕法尼亚州找到了工作才决定在此成家立业。父亲很孝敬爷爷奶奶,结婚前就把他们从乔治亚接到北方来住,成家以后又在原先房子的南头加盖了两卧室房,爷爷奶奶搬了进去,这就是美国人最常见的形式叫做公婆角 (in-law’s quarter)。无论是男方还是女方的父母与孩子的主房连在一起单住都叫公婆角。平时各吃各的,就是两家人,但是孩子小,放学回家的时候,父母还在班上,那么孙子们就会呆在爷爷奶奶家里。为了保护未成年儿童的安全,美国法律规定,未满十四岁的儿童不能独处在家,必须有监护人陪伴,可以是大于十四岁的保姆,朋友,亲属,兄弟姐妹。爷爷奶奶无形之中就给予子女家庭以巨大帮助。当然,老人以后行动不方便需要照顾,挨门的子女又会帮助他们。端从小就这样在父母回家之前天天与爷爷奶奶在一起生活,非常热爱老人。
经常地,爷爷奶奶会给他们讲起他们在南方生活的经历和所见所闻。听过他们的无数故事,端长大以后才明白为什么自己为什么这么怕狗。他们的故事里总是少不了狗追人,咬人的可怕情节。过去,白人农庄主根本不正眼瞧黑人,直到现在,南方当地的警察总是斜睨着上下打量,然后蔑视地喊他们,孩子(boy),尽管有些黑人已经三四十岁,也这样称呼,然后询问一些无足轻重的问题,例如你从哪里来,到哪里去,他们对白人从来不这样问话。警察身边的狼狗似乎对黑人也有偏见,喉咙总是发出威胁的呜呜声,随时都会冲上来,令人毛骨悚然。
小时候,端问过他们,曾祖父或者老祖宗为什么不逃跑,爷爷奶奶这时候就会摸着他的头,傻孩子,地那么大,两条腿能跑多远。白人开车到跟前然后放狗出来追,把逃跑的人腿咬烂,吓得魂儿都没有了。
在家里,他们用带有黑人特殊口音及俚语的语调交流,在公共场所例如学校就讲公共英语,像中国人讲地方话与普通话一个道理。黑人和白人之间有着一条天然的心理界沟,公共场合你好我好,骨子里可是泾渭分明。黑人还是愿意在黑人为主的教堂做礼拜,甚至牧师也会用黑人口语讲经布道。男人去黑人的酒吧,女人参加黑人的爬梯,黑孩子在公共学校里扎堆交朋友。即使社会地位混得很好,例如大学教授,律师,会计师,居住高档社区,那也是黑人聚居的高档社区。爷爷奶奶来到北方,发现这儿生活环境大为轻松,可是在南方留下的心理阴影依然影响着家人。
爷爷奶奶告诫孙子在外面做事要处处留神,千万别惹警察,他们从骨子里瞧不起黑人,出了事,对黑人开枪毫不留情。乔治亚的一个邻居小伙被警察怀疑犯了谋杀罪,在法庭上一定要他出据案发时不在场的证据,有时候这是很难做到的。可巧他们黑人邻里间有一个通行做法,买东西,银行存取款,或者能够给收据的地方一定拿收据。结果,这个年轻人找出了在那个时候买东西的发票,并回忆起当时与他在一起的人,才免于一场无妄之灾。所以,端也养成了要发票的习惯,他的自我保护意识很强。
