The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture.
Because of an unusually warm February and first half of March, cherry blossoms started to open several days ahead of their average schedule this year. However, a big drop in temperatures in the second half of March has slowed down the blossoms considerably in many cities of Japan.
