On Feb 10 2006 (Friday), I was invited to give a presentation on electricity and magnetism to Grade 5 students. Though it is intended to give some refreshment of the stuff those kids have learned, I did spend quite some time in putting together a 30+ slides of presentation, including basic concepts, some mechanisms using electricity and magnetism, and propose some activities so that the kids can be involved, make it more interactive. Things went smooth though I found that giving presentation to kids is quite different from to adults. We need to ask more questions, or let them ask question during the process, which can concentrate their attention, and making PowerPoint slides more colorful and interesting absolutely attracts their attention. And today I received an e-mail from their teacher (attached below) which I feel happy though I know it is kind of polite attitude. E-mail from their teacher: Thank you so much for your excellent presentation! It was a thorough review of the material for the past two units and helped the students prepare for their test. In my discussion with the students following the presentation, it seems that they have an enhanced understanding of the concepts. I was impressed with the effort you made to prepare for and to come out to do this presentation. I think elementary students can learn a lot from observing the commitment you showed in doing a task well and in coming on the bus with that heavy bin. Congratulations on a job well done and best wishes for great success in the future!
