Bringing Kentucky Derby fashion to the Sun City
On Sunday, March 25, the Borderland will be teeming with spectators, horse trainers and 3-year-old Thoroughbreds vying for a place in the 2018 Kentucky Derby. The competition will offer $1.5 million in purses – the total amount of money that is awarded to each of the highest finishers – making it the richest race on the road to Kentucky.
In Kentucky, derby culture is strong, and there’s no other person in El Paso who would know this best than Kelly Anne Beile, a transplant from the Bluegrass State who is now an anchor and reporter for KFOX 14 Morning News. Beile, who was crowned Ms. Kentucky in 2014, has attended the Kentucky Derby five times, each time fully immersing herself in the pomp that defines the Derby.
“Even though it’s the fastest two minutes in sports, there’s so much leading up to those two minutes and fashion is a big part of that, “ Beile said. “For example, in 2014, we went to three events the night before the Derby. You can easily change your outfit six to seven times within the span of 36 hours.”
