This weekend, Kendall Jenner stepped out in her classic paparazzi-ready fashion. She wore fist-size hoop earrings, Matrix-style sunglasses, button-fly jeans, and a plunging red Bec & Bridge blouse that was artfully tied to show off her naval and just sheer enough to reveal her nipples. What’s more, Jenner walked hand-in-hand with Bella Hadid—another model/celebrity known to bare her chest in public.
Shocked? Don’t be. Casually exposing one’s nipples—sans bra, sans pasties—has now become more of an afterthought than a pointed style move for the tabloids. Nipples have lost their oomph appeal, thanks to celebrities and models displaying them on the street, along with the fervent #FreeTheNipple campaign that has circulated for years on social media. Then there’s the fact that nipples have made more than one memorable appearance on the runway. At the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood Fall 1994 show, Kate Moss walked topless, courtesy of a minidress with a dropped under-the-breastbone top. A few years later for Spring 1998, Alexander McQueen’s rainy runway turned many of the collection’s white pieces into nipple-baring looks. After that, the semi-nude look made its way onto the red carpet and onstage. In 1998, Rose McGowan attended the MTV VMAs on the arm of Marilyn Manson in a slinky sheer dress that showed off her braless breasts. In 2004, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake popularized the term “wardrobe malfunction,” after he ripped off her top to reveal a metal orbital nipple ring at their Super Bowl halftime performance. Rihanna made history when she donned a sheer Adam Selman dress at the 2014 CFDA Awards. And yes, Hadid and Jenner have stepped out several times in evening ensembles that freed the nipple.
The difference now is that the trend is no longer reserved for the red carpet, the runway, or risqué nights out. Instead, it has trickled down to sunny sidewalks. Both Hadid and Jenner have translated their outré evening style into afternoon getups: Jenner has worn a see-through bodysuit with no bra, and Hadid has opted for a sheer black henley shirt that highlighted her glinting nipple ring. Rihanna has also pulled out sheer tops for day—and who can forget her “Work” music video, where she gyrated with Drake in a barely there spaghetti strap tank? On the runway, it has become a go-to. For Fall 2017, Lexi Boling walked for Calvin Klein in a sheer peach top paired with elegant polished trousers, while a model at Adam Selman showed off her nipples in a glitzed-up T-shirt. Maryam Nassir Zadeh, a designer beloved by a downtown crew of It girls like Camilla Deterre and India Salvor Menuez, had one model walk in a romantic, ruffle-laden, nipple-revealing top.
Can we expect regular people to tackle the trend next? Stay tuned: It doesn’t look like it will be nipped in the bud anytime soon.
