10 surprising beauty lessons we can learn from Love Island

Love Island has become a national guilty pleasure, or it has for the 1.25 million Brits who have been tuning into ITV2 religiously for the past month at least. For those who are still in denial about their obsession or have been faced with disapproval from high-brow friends, there’s good news as this week researchers from Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Germany revealed that fans of trash TV shows, like Love Island tend to be more intelligent.

This aside, while some might be quick to discount the idea that any beauty lessons could be learnt from the 13 contestants, aged between 18 and 31, currently sunning themselves up in Majorca, we beg to differ.

Wipes aren’t so bad Make-up wipes have a bad reputation among dermatologists for not removing everything and for encouraging breakouts. While we’re not about the entirely dispute the experts, we have watched Olivia Attwood wipe away her make-up most evenings and she doesn’t have a single blemish, which makes us feel a whole lot better.

Lash extensions were created for summer: Admittedly most of the lash extensions in the Villa are too dramatic, but there’s something to be said for getting a pair fitted before you go holiday.

Hair extensions never look good for long: While we can get on board with lashes, we draw the line at plug-in hair extensions, especially when the girls wear their hair in a half-up half-down top knot.

SPF is essential: Impressively, we haven’t seen any sunburn despite the scorching heat. Tanned skin is still technically sun damage, so we wouldn’t suggest anyone gets as bronzed as some of the contestants, but at least there hasn’t been any redness or peeling.

White nail polish should only be worn with a tan: The girls, along with Chris and Kem have experimented with various different nail shades. White has been one of the most popular hues and while it’s not one we’d recommend if you have porcelain, English rose skin, the contestants have proved it looks great against a tan.

The sun does wonders for your nails: While white is the colour of choice, some of the contestants have opted to go polish-free several times and have showcased the benefits the sun can have on your nails. This week, Montana’s nails looked particularly strong and healthy.

Less make-up is required on holiday: As the weeks have flown past and the girls have got more and more tanned. Comparing their day and night looks, it’s safe to say that now we’re a month in they don’t need to wear as much make-up in the evenings. Both Amber Davies and Tyla Carr in particular look much prettier with a more natural, minimal look.

Choose your doctor wisely: It wouldn’t be a beauty round-up without mentioning the high amounts of cosmetic surgery and ‘tweakments’ that are on display in the Villa. While we’re not going to name names, it’s safe to say that both current and previous contestants have highlighted how important it is to find a cosmetic doctor that knows when to say ‘no, you’ve had enough’.

A good pair of sunglasses can be your best friend: Why faff about with waterproof make-up when you can go barefaced during the day and employ a chic pair of sunglasses to disguise mascara-free lashes? Thank you for the tip, Montana.

A healthy trim makes all the difference: While Amber might have complained that Kem cut off too much hair, we’d argue he trimmed just the right amount. Several of the contestants would be wise to take him up on his offer of a free cut as after a month in the sun.
