I’ll just post what I wrote about and leave that up to you to decide. • Essays (Include Subjects): o Common App Main: I answered the “Significant Experience” prompt. This was based on a triggering experience I had in 3rd grade when I studied abroad for a year and learned French at a public elementary school in Montreal, causing my subsequent love for languages. o EC Short Answer: This was essentially a short blurb about what I do with my knowledge of multiple languages (translating, serving as a teaching assistant, etc.) and what language means to me. Reading it again, I feel like I really succeeded in communicating how strongly I felt about it. o Intellectual Vitality: I discussed the fact that I am a synesthete (see: Synesthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), meaning I make mental links between sounds, colors, words, ideas, and images (e.g. the word “Thursday”, when spoken aloud, sounds like a greenish blend to me). I talked about how this impacts the way I view the world, as well as how I learn things. o Roommate: Here I revealed a lot of random, yet interesting stuff about myself (talked about how I like foreign language films, decorating my room with postcards from places I’ve traveled to, late night chats, pizza crusts, and am very ticklish). The theme was the meaning of the word “together” and how this word would relate to my relationship with my future roommate. o Why Stanford: Somewhat generic description of Stanford's location in the American West and the historical implications of that idea (newness, discovery, adventure), as well as how I would match up personally to that creative/inventive spirit. o Other: Nothing else that was noteworthy. • Teacher Recommendations: Waived right to view • Counselor Rec: Waived right to view • Interview: N/A • Art Supplement: N/A Other: • Date Submitted App: October 1 • State (if domestic applicant): California (lived in Michigan during junior year and Singapore during underclassman years) • School Type: Small Private • Ethnicity: Chinese • Gender: Female • Special Circumstances (included in counselor rec): Attended 3 different schools throughout HS career • Intended Majors: Linguistics, Classics • Tip Factor: Certifiably fluent in Mandarin (S, R, W), French (S, R, W), Spanish (S, R, W), and German (S, R, W); currently studying Latin (R) and Ancient Greek (R) Reflection: • Strengths: Standardized test scores, somewhat consistent EC’s in spite of moving, essays, multilingualism, significant international experience (lived in 3 countries and traveled to over 15 others in Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East), evidence of overcoming hardships, uniqueness (?) • Weaknesses: Very competitive demographic (Asian female applying from southern California), grades • Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It could have been anything, honestly... • What would you have done differently? I’m not on the admissions committee, so I don’t know. Best of luck to all of you who didn’t get accepted either; I’m sure you’ll all end up at a wonderful college. Common App Long: About Piano and how I learned from criticism, I felt this was one of my strongest because it really showed my passion. Stanford Supplement: Intellectual Vitality: Thinking about who I am and my place in the world. Not the usual subject, but that's what makes it special =) Roommate: Definitely one of my favorites. Talked about my Asian stereotypes and how they don't all fit me. Had a LOT of humor and tongue-and-cheek language. Why Stanford: I think this one stood out. Didn't talk about anything Stanford specific. I was honest and told them that I just felt it was right for me and that I really wanted to go but had no logical explanation why. • Teacher Recommendation: I loved my math teacher... and she loved our class xD I'm assuming this one was great. Other was my 9th grade English teacher but also academic team coach. My scores are maybe average for Stanford and my standardized tests are only mediocre. I found my essays to really show a side of me that diverges from my accomplishments and achievements. I'm ridiculously excited right now though... even though it's 1 in the morning. xD General Comments: Congrats to all who were also accepted. Looking forward to meeting you come Fall of 2011. Unique background, insightful risky essays? [ b]General Comments:[/b] My advice to anyone who wants to get in would be strive to break your limits every time you come to a stumbling block. If you really want to do something, then go do it now, don't just say "Oh i'll do that later". As for the essay, read lots and lots and lots of essays online, preferably help others proofread their's, after you've seen lots of them, you'll start to understand the purpose and execution of a well written essay. When your writing your own, don't doubt yourself, and remember editors are there to make suggestions, not to write your essays for you. (That'll only apply if you understand what you're doing, which is why I would recommend reading and proofing college essays online starting now) Stanford was my dream school even before coming to America. [ *] Additional Rec: Principal: fantastic. He talked really frankly about the state of my high school (small, rural, public) and how I had exceeded the expectations that people had for students there (studying for the majority of AP classes on my own, etc.). Couldn't say enough nice things. [ *] Interview: Not offered. [ /list][ b]Other[ /b][ list] [ *] Applied for Financial Aid?: No. [ *] Intended Major: Public Policy or Political Science. [ /list][ b]Reflection[ /b][ list] [ *] Strengths: Everything except my SAT scores. [ *] Weaknesses: My scores. [ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think I'm one of the only rural Midwestern openly gay Presbyterian deacon political/women's rights/environmental activist who does show choir in the world, so I think my uniqueness set me apart. Only four graduates from my high school have gone out of state to school; two of them were my siblings. Really good essays. Luck. Decision: Deferred Objective: SAT I: 2110 (CR680 M700 W730) SAT II: Math 2 730 Literature 680 ACT: 33 (E34 M34 R34 S28 W11) Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0 Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Probably Top 5% (my school doesn't report to students) AP/IB (place score in parenthesis): BC Calc (3), NSL (5), IB French (5), IB Environmental (6) Senior Year Course Load: IB Psychology, Adv Multivariable Calc/Differential Equations, IB European History, IB Theory of Knowledge, Law, IB Higher Level Math, IB English Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): honor roll, national merit commended, Maryland distinguished scholar finalist Subjective: Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Horseback Riding, National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Countywide Youth Advisory Committee, Tutoring, Piano, Flute, Baseball Team Manager Job/Work Experience: Regularly Babysit 3 Children, Horseback Riding Camp Counselor Volunteer/Community service: About 700 Hours So Far; Therapeutic Horseback Riding Instructor (for special needs children + veterans), Volunteer in the Federal Public Defenders Office Summer Activities: Lazarus Leadership Fellows Program (created and operated a baseball + nutrition camp for a group of underprivileged children), mostly volunteering with Therapeutic Riding Teacher Recommendation: Probably excellent; My math teacher has taught me for 2 years and is teaching my 2 classes this year, and is a close family friend. I think I was deferred instead of flat out rejected so as not to anger their alum too much General Comments: I'm really, really disappointed. I've wanted to go to Stanford since 5th grade (which of course, I know so many others have). I'm really beating myself up over this. I'm thrilled to still have a chance, but I can't help but feel a little let down, and I'm not too optimistic about getting in. I'm really hurt right now but I know it'll all work out eventually. |
