Here is some of my experience about learning to read with some recommendation of book list. Hope you will like it:
(1) Since he loves planes crazily, we get him one of the lego city level 1 books: Ready to takeoff!
It is a simple book with small amount of words. However, to me, it is the best book for beginning readers (we later also bought him quite some beginner books. None is as good as this one). Keep reading it very day during one month. You will find the progress within two/three weeks.
When you read the book, follow three steps every day: I read, we read, you read. That means, you tell *** you will read each sentence once first, then ask *** to read with you as a second time. Last, leave *** alone for the third time.
After one/two months, you can start more of the following books, step by step:
