RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. -- Hundreds of students are in shock over the death of a popular Rancho Bernardo scholar, found unresponsive by his parents Thursday morning.
17-year-old David Hu was recently named a 2012 National Merit Semi-finalist, and scored a perfect 2400 on his SAT.
Jason Hu found David unconscious in his bed Thursday morning and called 911.
Medics attempted to resuscitate him. Hu was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead. The cause is still unknown.
The father racked with paternal guilt for not knowing CPR.
"If I did at the very beginning, maybe my son will come back," he said.
Friends and family held a candlelight vigil for Hu, who was the top-ranked student at Rancho Bernado High School with a 4.6 GPA; and had already been accepted to MIT.
For nearly two hours, students traded stories, laughs and tears for their friend, who was also a varsity swimmer and peer counselor.
"How he lived his life, and the people he touched, he really was someone that was going to change the world," said the school's principal, Paul Robinson.
The Hu family had a parting message for other parents.
"Don't push your child too hard to learn," said Hu. "MIT, Harvard, community college.... it doesn't matter."
