There are many ways of finding volunteer work. The easiest way to find volunteer work is probably through a school club, though the work found there is more likely to be of the generic type such as soup kitchens, community events, and things like that. School clubs get more access to volunteer work because volunteer groups like having a regular group of people who will almost always be able to fill volunteer spots.
The more unusual types of volunteering usually have to be found on your own. These types of volunteering would be being a counselor at a camp or helping the less fortunate in other countries. These usually require applying in advance, and many of these opportunities are actually impacted as many others are probably also interested in the unique work. A site like http://www.ecoteer.com/ is an example of a unique volunteer job because it involves travelling to another country to do work.
When looking for volunteer work on your own, where you look depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for some local community things, there is a site called http://www.volunteermatch.org/. In the site there is a variety of activities, from one time volunteering to a 1 year commitment at a hospital or museum.
Volunteer opportunities can come in many forms and many places, and as long as you can commit the time to do them they are always worth the experience.
