It is estimated that each year we will Lose 5,000 Young People.
We lose approximately 100+ young people
EACH WEEK in our nation to Suicide.
That means in a typical week, there are more than 19,000 suicides attempts nationally!
Almost two attempts each minute!
Suicide is the THIRD leading cause of death for youth ages15-24
In Ages 10-14…We have seen an alarming 128% increase
in Suicides since 1980.
Suicide is now the SECOND leading cause of death for college-age youth.
SYMPTOMS of TEEN DEPRESSION
8226; Depressed or irritable mood
8226; Decreased interest or pleasure in activities
8226; Substance abuse
8226; Change in appetite or weight
8226; Sleeping more or less than usual
8226; Feeling restless or slowed down
8226; Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
*especially following an incident at home or school
8226; Decreased concentration
8226; Sense of hopelessness
8226; Recurrent thoughts of suicide
8226; Fatigue or loss of energy

WARNING SIGNALS

8226;Giving away prized possessions

THE DO’S
8226; Do get involved
8226; Do be willing to listen
8226; Do allow them to express their feeling
8226; Do discuss suicide openly and frankly
8226; Do be a non-judgmental listener
8226; Do show interest and support
8226; Do get help from agencies and professionals
8226; Do notify parent or guardian if the student has acknowledged having access to drugs and lethal weapons
AND DONT’S
Don’t refuse to talk about it
Don’t offer platitudes or glib answers
Don’t “dare” a suicidal person to commit suicide (this may come from their peers, “my space” or through text messages)
